A 7.5 meter high pyramid of 50,116 champagne glasses. Event manager Luuk Broos and his team managed to break the world record for ‘largest champagne tower’ in Madrid last night. “It was still very exciting.”

Twenty-five years ago he started his first pyramid. “At the opening of the town hall of Kaatsheuvel, they asked me if I had a nice idea,” Luuk tells Editie NL. He learned about the world record of building pyramids from champagne glasses. “I thought: I’m going to break that record.”

BUILD IN FIVE DAYS

He succeeded then with 5,000 glasses and a number of times after that, the most recent example being the 50,116 glass pyramid that he and his team managed to complete yesterday in Madrid. They spent five days building the glass structure. “We were indestructible, we continued to build.”

To seal the record, the aim is for an entire champagne bottle to be poured over the top glass. Normally they use a big elevator to get to the top. “But the floor of this room couldn’t hold that weight,” says Luuk. And so someone had to pour the glass hanging in a rig.

STEADY HANDS

“That almost went wrong. It only took a glass to move a little bit and everything was blown off.” The chosen one for this job was good friend Pieter. “Because he’s a surgeon, we thought he must have the most steady hands.”

And he had. The record was successfully broken and Moët’s expensive magnum bottle was emptied to the last drop.

STRESS RESISTANT

The minutes before the moment in question, Luuk remained calm. “I am quite resistant to stress, but my daughter couldn’t take it anymore.” The 19-year-old Lotte will soon take over her father’s events company. “She is really into it. She also enjoyed it so much yesterday, which is very nice to see.”

For the time being, the champagne glasses team is still in Madrid to enjoy the achievement. But the new assignments are pouring in and Luuk is already looking forward to the next record attempt. “We just keep going. There are all kinds of plans to build many more champagne towers worldwide. Eventually we hope to be able to make one with 160,000 glasses.”
